Life at Quba

Quba Life, Salcombe, Devon.

The foundations of Quba are in British nautical heritage. With this is mind, there's nowhere better to be based than Salcombe.

With its rich maritime history and natural protected harbour on the estuary, Salcombe has long been a mecca for sailing and boating. It's the obvious place for The Sail Loft - our head office and where we make the jackets and bags.

The Quba team is a mix of locals and those that have chosen to live by the sea. When we're not working you might find us bass fishing over the Bar (sand eels tend to work best) or throwing out a couple of lobster pots, usually to no avail. In the winter months, when the sea's unforgiving, there's nothing better than walking from East Portlemouth to the Pig's Nose Inn at East Prawle, or tucking into winter Sunday roasts at The Cricket Inn at Beesands.

This passion for the sea and all things nautical is evident in everything we do at Quba. At the heart of this is our sailcloth heritage. Whether Dacron, or old canvas, sailcloth is a fantastic medium to work with. It is hand-crafted, it has a history, and ultimately it creates items of beauty and individuality.

Thanks to Scratch for the use of his retired fishing boat, the Frances; to Lincombe Boat Yard, and to Golly the fisherman. If the crabs are no good next year, Gol, perhaps you could take up modelling full time?

The sea washes, salts, erodes and sculpts everything it touches. It is destructive but in the process, it creates the new. This is the insight upon which both Quba product and retail space are infused with seaness.
